Herbicides

Pre-emergent herbicide;  Use Corn Gluten Meal as a pre-emergent herbicide.  Timing is very important when using this product as an herbicide.  Corn Gluten Meal works by killing the first roots that are formed by the seedling while it is in the false leaf stage, once the new plant matures into it's true leave the Corn Gluten Meal will not work.  Apply very early spring and very early fall before you see the weeds themselves.  This is and indiscriminate herbicide and will stop your seeds  you plant from sprouting, so be careful where you apply it.  A side benefit to using the Corn Gluten Meal is that it is very good nitrogen source when it breaks down.

Post-emergent herbicide;  Organic herbicides are limited at this time the surest way to remove weeds is manually (pulling or hoeing), but this takes a lot of time.  20% vinegar (one gallon, full strength) mixed with orange oil (4 ounces) is a good herbicide that will kill  anything it comes in contact with.  This mixture kills by burning the leaves of the plant and making it week, you may need a second application.

Tall weed control in turf grass is best done by frequent grass cutting.  By keeping the tops of the weeds cut back the weeds is soon overtaken by the turf grass.
