Make Up Your Bed Healthy soil is the way to great flowers, lush shrubs and delicious vegetables. Healthy soil minimizes insect and disease problems. To have a productive organic spring garden you should start preparing the soil in the late winter or very early spring. 1. Remove weeds and grass, pulling is the best, hoeing is the next best. 2. Cover the bare soil with 4 to 6 inches of compost. 3. Sprinkle dry organic fertilizer on the compost. (two pounds per 100 square feet) 4. Sprinkle ¼ cup of dry molasses, or use 1/8 cup of liquid molasses diluted in 1 gallon of water (per 100 square feet) sprinkled on top of the compost. 5. Till this mixture into the soil to a depth of 8 to 10 inches. Level the soil for planting. 6. Mulch around the transplants or leave room for the seeds to sprout. Cover all other bare soil with mulch. 7. Here is the best part…you do not have to till this soil again. Each season follow steps 3, 4, and 6. Do not till this into the soil, just start planting. You are now on your way to a 'no till garden' and will be able to enjoy your endeavor with out fear of contamination by chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. . |
